Applying to HCEMSAll members of HCEMS must be certified New York State Basic EMT's and a full time student of Hamilton College living on campus. Early during the fall semester, there will be two informational meetings on how to apply for membership to HCEMS. Only first and second year students may apply. Emails and flyers will give the date, time and location of the meetings. After attending one of the informational meetings, interested first and second year students may begin the application process which consist of a personal form, two recommendation forms, individual and group interviews. If accepted for membership as a member-in-training, the student will take the Basic EMT course taught on campus during the spring semester. If taking the course during the freshman year, the student will sign a contract stating that he/she will be active with HCEMS for four academic semesters beginning with two consecutive semesters immediately after successfully completing the EMT course and passing the NYS certification exam. Leave of absence for study abroad will be limited to one semester during the junior or senior year. In return, HCEMS will supply the agency code number to the course instructor verifying membership to HCEMS agency and thereby making the student eligible for full tuition payment by the state of New York. If taking the course during the sophomore year, the student will sign a contract stating that he/she will be active with HCEMS for four consecutive semesters beginning immediately after successfully completing the EMT course and passing the NYS certification exam. In return, HCEMS will supply the agency code number to the course instructor verifying membership to HCEMS and thereby making the student eligible for full tuition payment by the state of New York. Any individual that is currently certified as an EMT in New York State may apply for membership to HCEMS and participate in the fall interview process. If accepted, they would begin active membership the following fall. Individuals holding certification from another state at the EMT-B or higher level may apply for reciprocity in NY and then apply for membership in HCEMS during the fall semester and if accepted begin active membership the following fall.
